Escape from Cruelty (Serial No. 1) Issue: Forced Child LaborSummary: Yassin, an orphan forced to work for a man named Jabar, one day hears a radio program on child labor. He learns forced child labor is forbidden under Afghan law and runs away. Yassin is found by a policeman and taken to a local shura where he meets an elder named Kaka Raouf. The old man goes to Jabar and admonishes him for making Yassin work. Jabar frees Yassin, who returns to Kaka Raouf and enrolls in school. Constitutional articles referenced: 43 and 49

Blind of One’s Own Shortcomings but Aware of Others’ (Serial No. 2) Issue: Education RightsSummary: Yassin ridicules his classmate, Razia, for taking her studies very seriously. But when exam time comes and Razia passes and Yassin failes, Yassin complains to Kaka Raouf. The elder reprimands Yassin for not working harder. Ashamed, Yassin apologizes to Razia and tells her that, under the Afghan constitution, everyone—including girls—has the right to education. Razia accepts Yassin’s apology. One Who Makes Trouble for Others Will Eventually Find Trouble Himself (Serial No. 3) Issue: Freedom RightsSummary: Yassin and Kaka Raouf take a taxi to visit the next village. When the taxi driver drives too fast, disobeying traffic laws, Yassin and Kaka Raouf decide to walk. The taxi driver continues to drive too fast and hits and kills a man in the village. Yassin is upset when he sees the man’s son crying. Kaka Raouf explains that the driver’s disregard for the law led to the accident and that everyone must have respect for each other’s rights to live in harmony. Getting One’s Just Deserts (Serial No. 4) Issue: Police Bribes and Freedom of ExpressionSummary: A policeman stops Yassin, claims Yassin has no permit for the cart he is pushing and demands a bribe. A friendly policeman explains that demanding bribes is illegal but the only way to catch the bad policeman is to collect evidence. Yassin eventually catches the bad policeman again demanding a bribe. Good Things Eventually Go To the Person Who Deserves Them (Serial No. 5) Issue: Property RightsSummary: After the war, Yassin and his sister are reunited. They return to their old house only to find it has been taken over by a powerful man who will not give it up. Aamena, a law student, takes Yassin and his sister to court with their property deeds and pictures proving that the house is still theirs. In court, Yassin and his sister win back their house.
